Patna University, the seventh oldest University of India, is the first university in the state of Bihar. The university was established in 1917. At present there are 10 colleges of Patna University in Bihar - (i) B. N. College, (ii) College of Arts & Crafts, (iii) Magadh Mahila College, (iv) Patna College, (v) Patna Law College, (vi) Patna Science College, (vii) Patna Training College, (viii) Patna Women's College, (ix) Vanijaya Mahavidyalaya and (x) Women's Training College. Patna Medical College and Hospital (PMCH), also known as Prince of Wales Medical College, was an affiliate unit of the university, is now affiliated to Aryabhatta Knowledge University. Currently, Patna Dental College and Hospital is affiliated to two universities, Patna University and Aryabhatta Knowledge University.

Traditional courses offered by PU are M.A. in English, Hindi, Sanskrit, Maithili, Bengali, Urdu, Arabic, Persian, Philosophy under the department of Humanities; MA PMIR (LSW), M.A. in Economics, Rural Studies, History, Political Science, A.I.H & Archaeology, Sociology, Geography, Psychology, Home Science under the department of Social Sciences.

Patna University also offers M.Sc in Physics, Chemistry, Botany, Biochemistry, Zoology, Geology, Mathematics and Statistics; M.Com in Applied Economics & Commerce. M.Ed., LL.M. (Law), Fine Arts (Arts & Crafts) are also offered by PU, Patna.

2. College of Arts & Crafts, Patna: College of Art and Crafts offers 4-year Bachelor of Fine Arts Degree course at Vidyapati Marg under Patna University. The subjects of 1-year Foundation Course are Painting, Sculpture, Applied Art and Printmaking. And, the subjects for Specialization Course are Painting, Sculpture, Applied Arts, Graphics or Printmaking.

3. Magadh Mahila College, North Gandhi Maidan: Magadh Mahila College is the oldest women's government college in Bihar. The girls' college was established in 1946, and teaching in science subjects started in 1947. Magadh Mahila College offers B.A. / B.Sc in Computer Applications, PGDCA (Post Graduate Diploma in Computer Applications), CIC, Certificate Course in Computer Applications. For admission to BCA & P.G.D.C.A. programme you have to sit for an entrance/written test followed by an interview. The college also offers Bachelor in Commerce (Hons. Degree), Bachelor of Business Administration/ B.B.A. (eligibility: I.A/ I.Sc./ I.Com/+2 or Equivalent), Bachelor of Social Work/ B.S.W. 4. Patna College, Ashok Rajpath: Patna college was established as a government college in 1863, and became a constituent unit of Patna University in 1952. 6. Patna Science College: The science college was initially opened as the Science Department of Patna University. 7. Patna Training College, Baripath, Dariyapur: It is a boy's B.Ed college offering Bachelor of Education. 8. Patna Women's College, Bailey Road:  It is the first college for women in Bihar. The women's college offers about 75 graduate (B.A. / B.Sc. / B.Com-Hons. in Accounts) and postgraduate (M.A., M.Com, MBA, M.Ed, MSW, MMC) degree, diploma, certificate, B.Ed, management and professional degree courses.
